![]() The contract explicitly stated that I may have to re-rig the character, and so I did after we agreed on a price. And so, as the 4th rigger in line, me telling them that the rig I was provided was trash was quite worrisome and seemed like deja vu to the team. I have no idea what happened to number 2, or number 3, but apparently each successor hired on said the work of their predecessor was trash. Then animator 2 received the rig and said animator 1 did a terrible job. ![]() I was told they hired animator 1 and he crapped out. The first alarm bell that *should* have gone off for me was when I received the rig to animate on, I was informed that I would be the 4th animator they used for this. That quelled any qualms, and boom- I’m on board. Ultimately, the fact that I had no FPS-animation experience was put to bed when I offered to lower my rate to that of the previous company I had worked for I assured them that I am not here to nickle and dime you, I am honest, I am hard working, and if it scares you to hire me for a type of animation I’ve not done before then I will lower my asking rate to the rate afforded to me from my previous company. I don’t know how to word it, but I assured them both that I can animate and I know my way around Unity. Ultimately, they understood that I was an animator, then a rigger, then a. The two men who interviewed me were happy with all of my answers, and despite the fact they were concerned with the fact I’ve never created first person animations before, decided to proceed with me as their pick for their project. I was open, upfront, and honest about it. “No, I have never created first person animations before”. The emails escalated into a phone interview where I was candid about all my experience, all my skills, and repeated my work history many times. I left hundreds of dollars on the table and under normal circumstances I would bend over backwards to earn a buck and improve my financial situation, but I was pushed beyond any limit I thought I would ever be able to handle, and my wonderful and supportive wife told me that this was no amount of money to lose so much sleep, aggravation, and sanity over. This freelance job was the first thing I’ve ever quit in my life. My father raised me to be respectful, to never go back on my word, and to understand that giving someone your word – and shaking their hand – is an iron clad agreement you can never go back on. It had, without question, provided me with the most vexing and frustrating experience I’ve ever had in my life – professional or personal. I’ve learned a lot during my time in this industry and I’ve had a lot of experiences, some great, some bad but about 2 months ago I had the worst 3.5 weeks of my professional career yet. I will say, for credibility purposes, that I have worked on 4 AAA titles released to PC/Xbox/PS4. I think it’s a bit unprofessional, but not so much so that I shouldn’t post it anywhere. I originally wrote this on my blog and have since removed it. PART 1Part 2 and 3 in subsequent comments
